Otherwise you can hear the oscillator in bypass, if the oscillator is running. This is the same thing as turning the threshold pot all the way down when the effect is bypassed. A lot of guys were building the Ugly Face with an LFO modulating the LED, in place of the envelope. Looks like what is going on in the video.
